Healthy Skin is something that we all wish for ourselves. The idea that skin should be totally flawless is something that many of us dream about but few of us realistically can achieve. But there are a few simple things that we all can do to help our skin dramatically and put us well on the road towards having healthy skin.
Drink more water…….keep your skin well hydrated
We need to ensure that your skin is adequately hydrated for it to be healthy. This is the most fundamental step in ensuring our skin is healthy. If you think you don’t like water then try to find ways that you can get the fluids in that don’t compromise the effect you are wanting for your skin, and that is hydration. Tea and Coffee do not count as both are diuretics and this counteracts any good you are trying to achieve. Think of flavouring your water with a slice of lemon or orange. Consider herbal teas. Low sugar or diet cordial mixes are an option if you really cannot palate water. However if we can drink it…our skin will love us for it.
Don’t use harsh chemicals on your skin
Don’t use products on your skin that are harsh, if your products aren’t pH neutral and most are not then you skin needs time to recover from bathing. So look for products that are pH neutral. Don’t use chemicals that have nasty harsh abrasive chemicals in it read this article about what harsh chemicals are found in your common body care products and exclude them from your healthy skin regime.
Protect Your Skin from the Sun
You have heard this message before and may have even ignored it, but the fact remains that the sun does damage the skin. So choose a sunscreen that has low toxicity and apply it daily without fail especially during the warmer months. Some moisturisers and cosmetics has sunscreen built in them.
Eat More Foods Rich In Antioxidants
We all need to eat a diet that is rich in antioxidants and nutrients that are beneficial to the skin. To learn more about antioxidants and their affect on the skin read this article. Some foods that are rich in antioxidants include:
Green tea ( not only rich in antioxidants but useful as it ads to your fluid intake daily)
oranges, peppers, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, berries, especially blueberries, cabbage, tomatoes (rich sources of ascorbic acid- Vitamin C)
oily fish, milk and butter, liver, eggs, carrots (Sources of Vitamin A)
herring, molasses, liver, soybeans, sunflower seeds, maple syrup, egg yolks, lamb, chicken, oats, whole wheat, rye, corn, beef, coconut, beetroot, turkey, walnuts, beans, avocados (all rich in zinc, which is helpful for blemish prone skin)
These are the basics of maintaining healthy skin, and are often the most over-looked as sometimes we are looking for answers that are more complicated than they need to be. If your skin isn’t at it’s best first look at these fundamentals…
Is my skin well hydrated?
Am I protecting my skin with non toxic products and from the sun damage?
Am I eating a variety of foods that are high in antioxidant nutrients?
Cover the Basics and have Healthier Skin
If you are certain that you have covered your basics and your still not happy with your skin then you may want to see a dermatologist, especially if you have acne prone skin which left untreated can lead to scarring. If you haven’t covered your basics then get drinking and eating and be on your way to having healthy skin!
We all want healthy skin and we spend our time and dollars chasing products that promise to make us look younger. And lets face it most of us do feel so much better about ourselves if we are looking good. However, having healthy skin goes beyond just applying the most expensive product with the most outrageous claims . It is so important to remember that our skin is our largest organ and like all of our bodies organs it cannot function with out adequate hydration…….. no matter what creams and potions you are putting on it. The most fundamental step to having healthy skin is hydration. After hydration comes nutrition. Our bodies need optimal nutrition to function well. So lets have a closer look at Antioxidants, thinking of them as an internal natural body product that we can use to nourish our skin from the inside and limit the oxidation processes that happen on a cellular level within our bodies…. Lets look at Antioxidants for Healthy Skin
What are Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are phytochemicals, vitamins and other nutrients naturally occurring in foods, that protect our cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants you have most probably heard of include vitamins A, C and E, and carotenoids.
What are Free Radicals?
Free radicals form during normal metabolism and through external factors such as ultra-violet radiation and pollution. It is the oxidation process that occurs in our cells and has been linked to the acceleration of harmful health issues such as disease and cancer. As well as being responsible in part for the signs of aging with-in our bodies.
Where are Antioxidants Found?
Most antioxidants are found in plant foods. This explains the importance of eating 5-7 servings of fruit and vegetables daily.
Here is a list of Antioxidant rich foods:
vitamin C – found in citrus fruits, blackcurrants, capsicum, and berries
vitamin E – found in vegetable oils, avocadoes, nuts, and wholegrains
beta carotene – found in pumpkin, and carrots
selenium – found in seafood, lean meat, and wholegrains
anthocyanins – found in berries, eggplants, and grapes
catechins – found in red wine and tea
flavenoids – found in tea, citrus fruits, red wine, and apples
isoflavenoids – found in soy products, lentils, and milk
lignans – found in sesame seeds, bran, vegetables, and wholegrains
lutein – found in leafy greens and corn
lycopene – found in tomatoes and watermelon
manganese found in lean meat, seafood, milk, and nuts
Today’s fast-food society and nutrient deficient soils makes it difficult, to obtain the quality and concentrations of daily nutrients necessary to positively impact on our diets. Nutritionists tell us we are falling short of our daily nutritional needs. It is hard to measure the amount of success that taking extra supplements is having within our bodies, just as it is hard to measure the actual impact of eating fresh fruit and vegetables has. The key really has to be you and whether you think you maybe lacking. So if you think your falling short of your 5-7 serves of fresh fruit and vegetables then you may want to consider increasing your intake of foods known to be rich in antioxidants. Or you may consider taking supplements. There are many antioxidant supplements available on the market including vitamin and mineral supplements. How you choose to incorporate antioxidants into your diet isn’t as important as making sure you do have a diet rich in these disease and age fighting plant foods. And remember to keep up the hydration, our skin needs to be hydrated to be healthy.
Check out this helpful article about what to look out for in the personal care products that you purchase for you home. Its an easy read about what to look for on labels to avoid the nasty chemicals……
The average adult uses 9 personal care products daily, exposing them to 126 chemicals every day. It may be small amounts and some of us may still think it wont impact on our health, however, recent studies have shown that these chemicals can and do build up in our bodies. And while some people may cling to outdated beliefs, the majority of us grow, and become more knowledgeable and thereby recognise that information is constantly evolving about our health. In time we realise that being informed is very much about deliberate consciousness when in regards to our health.
I can remember clear visions of my mother and father smoking inside the house, in the car, and of them spraying fly spray around the surfaces where we prepared food, sometimes even settling on our drinks. Clearly I would not be doing any of that in my home nowadays, In fact if I did my family would probably think I had gone nuts. My children have grown up never seeing anyone smoke inside homes or restaurants. To me that demonstrates that as a society there is a trend to take the unhealthy practices within it and to make them socially unacceptable. There are trends within our society of what is acceptable and what is not, and each trend is based on education, and what is the known truth about a topic at the given time.
We are currently seeing a trend towards healthy well-being in both the products we consume and the bodycare products we are using. In supermarkets and vegetable markets we are seeing organic produce and natural body products. And I have noticed some of the big name companies are introducing natural body products to their established bodycare lines, as they clearly need to stay up with the market demands and trends. Now days, I believe, most of us are more focused and take more responsibility for our own wellness than we ever have. I think that the legislators and the powers that be are not looking after the best interests of our families, as we once may have presumed they were. And in acknowledging that, most of us are looking for information as to be certain we are being truthfully informed about the choices we make for ourselves and our families well-being.

Organic and natural body products are safer for your skin, because we now know that what we put on your skin eventually ends up in our body through our skin. This is why lots of medications are now absorbed through transdermal patches on the skin. Certified organic and natural body products are made with ingredients that are grown organically free of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified organisms. They do not include harmful additives such as petroleum bi-products, and artificial chemicals. Certified organic products are completely healthy and natural.
Most of us know realise the importance of washing and peeling our whole fruits and vegetables to reduce our intake of pesticides and chemicals when eating. Many of us are seeking organic whole foods when shopping and more of us are reading labels on packaged foods to look at what chemical additives are in them. Some of us now are realising that the essence of thinking about what chemicals we don’t want in our bodies extends far beyond what we eat. As consumers we are becoming more aware about the relationship between what we put on and in our bodies and any effects short or long term that any product may have. We are becoming informed about the negatives and the benefits of certain foods and products. If you, like me are eating organically then purchasing or making your own organic and natural body products clearly is the next transition for your well being.
If you have favourite products that you have used and trusted for years the transition to using only natural body products can be somewhat overwhelming. So where do you start? I combine home made products with shop bought natural body products which are certified organic. I like to make my own room freshener sprays using certified organic essential oils, I have posted my favourite recipe of a citrus room freshener here. I use a mixture of bicarb soda and vinegar to clean the bathroom. For most cleaning jobs in the house I use bicarb soda vinegar and vinegar.
I am still researching and learning more everyday about what is and is not healthy for me and my family especially when it comes to our bodycare products and I welcome any new knowledge on the subject.

Do you eat organic food, but never think twice about the chemicals in the personal care products you use on your skin? It’s not easy to find organic skin care and beauty products, but environmentalist and author Anna Lappe has expert tips.
How To Choose Organic Skin And Beauty Products
You may be unpleasantly surprised to learn that unlike food there is no government certified labeling program for organic ingredients in skin care and beauty products. So how can you tell whether you’re choosing organic cosmetics and skin care products or not?
* Read the labels, not just the name of the product. Some products will include the word organic in their name, but on closer inspection of the ingredients you wont find any organic ingredients at all.
* Check the label to see whether the ingredients include petroleum, synthetic preservatives or artificial colors. Also watch out for parabens and phthaltes.
* You can also consult the Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep website, www.cosmeticsdatabase.com. You can enter the name of the products you use and see whether they contain ingredients you want to avoid.
